Do-It-Yourself.

Refers to artifacts that come as design files and/or instructions for the user to create or fabricate.

DIY production stands in contrast with traditional production, which is geared towards designing artifacts as products, to be distributed through markets (sold / commerce).

Designing for DIY is different than designing a product in that effort is deployed to understand the context in which the user evolves to make choices of materials and fabrication methods that are readily available in the user's environment. In other words, the designer conceives the artifact to make it easy for the user to fabricate, maintain and upgrade it.
