Spinoff

Spinoff refers to a new independent project or venture that is created from a parent project or venture. A spinoff can occur when the the focus within a project or venture diverges. In order to reduce internal complexity a focus that has gained critical mass can be separated from the rest as an independent project or venture. This is different from forking because the spinoff process splits an organization into two or more organizations that have very different focus (can be products or services). Forking creates two or more organizations that are focused on very similar deliverable, that can be considered versions of each others.
