Scaling

Scaling is often used in capitalism as the increase in size of a process or system. It is like the growth of an empire, the growth of a corporation. Scaling is monolithic.

In p2p, Vini suggests to use expansion. We talk about economic expansion and contraction. He proposes to use network expansion rather than scaling.

Scaling is like enlarging a picture, preserving its structure. Networks grow / expand at the edge, as more stuff attaches to them. They don't preserve the structure necessarily, only some principles. There is emergence at play in network expansion, not everything is planned, not everything is preserved.
